Menorca begins October with a marked change in the weather. After several warm days, AEMET has issued a yellow warning for rain and storms this Thursday, 1 October 2026. The most unsettled conditions are expected during the afternoon, when many people are still making the most of the beach or heading out on the water.
Warnings can change as new forecasts are issued. Before planning your day, check the official AEMET warning service shortly before leaving rather than relying on a forecast saved the day before.
When could it rain in Menorca today?
The period requiring the most attention begins from around 14:00, when the chance of showers and storms increases. AEMET’s warning detail includes local rainfall rates of up to 30 litres per square metre in one hour, together with storms that may bring strong wind gusts and hail in the most exposed areas.
The Son Bou beach forecast shows a very cloudy, rainy morning followed by showers in the afternoon. It is a local reference, not a promise for every cove: a storm can affect one part of Menorca while another still has sunny spells.
Coastal conditions will also become unsettled
AEMET’s marine forecast for Menorca says that very heavy showers with thunderstorms cannot be ruled out during the afternoon in both the island’s northern and southern coastal waters. Winds from the southeast may turn northeast in the afternoon; an easterly swell of about one metre is expected, and the sea may build from slight to moderate.
That means a calm morning is not a good reason to head far from shore in a small boat or to plan a snorkelling, kayaking or paddleboarding trip without time to turn back. The risk is not limited to rain: a sudden gust, lightning or a quick change in the sea can make the return difficult.
What to do if a storm catches you on the beach
- Leave the water as soon as you hear thunder. Do not wait for heavy rain.
- Find an enclosed building or a vehicle and move away from the shoreline, rocks and exposed high points.
- Do not shelter under an isolated tree or stay beside fences, metal umbrellas or exposed structures.
- If you are driving to a cove, slow down and never cross a flooded stream, ford or low-lying track.
- If you are on a boat, follow the latest marine information and aim to return to port before the storm reaches your area.
Intense showers can cause sudden flooding in low-lying areas. In an emergency, call 112 and follow the instructions of the emergency services.
An unsettled spell may last beyond today
In its special warning, AEMET explains that cold air aloft and moisture from the Mediterranean will support an unsettled spell over the coming days, although its exact development remains uncertain. Menorca’s conditions will depend on the track of each shower, so the live warning map and local forecast are more useful than one general forecast for the whole of the Balearic Islands.
